Standalone Edge

Hello,

I want to configure that Standalone Edge has two vswitches.

One vswitch has some VLANs and the othter vswich has some VLANs too.

I want to into L2VPN tunnel these VLANs.

Can I do this?

Edge doesnt work in that way. You can bridge multiple interfaces if you want do to so. What is you final goal?

L2VPN is primarily designed for following scenarios

1. Extend your Datacenter to cloud for cloud bursting. In this case, it is assumed you have NSX in your datacenter

2. Cloud on boarding, while in this case it is assumed you have NSX in the destination datacenter

It is reason what you are trying to achieve is not documented anywhere. It might work but will be under EULA are points which you should review. If it is for lab purpose I won't be surprise if it works.

sorry couldn't help much. These are just my thoughts.

Thank you for you reply.

By default, Standalone Edge is deployed that has one interface. There is no choice.

After deployed, can I add a second network interface to SAE?

I'm sorry, I don't understand well about Standalone Edge.

Thank you for you reply.

In my case, No2.

I want to try L2VPN on-premise datacenter network to public cloud.

And I want to L2VPN both segmentA@vswitch A and segmentB@vswitch B.

But I don't know how to this.

If you have NSX On premises you have valid use case for it. If you don't have NSX on premises below is not applicable then.

Refer to https://vzealand.com/2016/10/22/vcap6-nv-3v0-643-study-guide-part-9c-nsx-l2-vpn/ bayupw

NB: VXLAN to VLAN is documented in detailed on the web/vmware documentation. But VLAN to VLAN is not seen on the web and I'm unsure of about support model when you have standalone edges on both sides.

Thanks, TechStarts.

Yes, I have NSX on datacenter and my case is VLAN to VXLAN.

So, my question is that "should I deploy standalone edge per vswitch?".

When I deployed a Standalone Edge, I could not add two interfaces to Standalone Edge(by default, vnic is one).

Hi kwskT2Y ,

I think for that volume of networks segments you'll need to configure the inside interface as a trunk sink port.

Yes - you will need to deploy the edge per distributed switch.  The single edge sink port will not be able to 'capture' packets on the other distributed switch.

Just to clarify, you're using distributed switches (not standard vswitches right?) I'm pretty certain DVS is not optional for the L2VPN functionality.

grosas,

Thank you for your reply.

I understand that standalone edge has to be deployed per distributed switch.

If I use a standard vswitch, can standalone edge have trunk ports each vswitch?

Hi kwskT2Y

This will not work with standard vswitch, you need DVS sink trunk ports for the inside interfaces to behave correctly.

Are you using NSX 6.1 and above? Only in this version you can have sub-interface which allow you extend L2 Networks.

With Single Edge you can have 200 Plus sub-interfaces.

grosas,

Thank you for yourr reply.

I'm sorry, I was misunderstanding it.

To use standalone edge, There must be a DVS.

Thanks a lot. 🙂
