NSX logical switch for vMotion

Hi,

I am studying NSX for VMware vsphere.

In NSX environment, there will be one logical switch per VNI. And the VMs will connect to the logical switches.

The VMKernel ports for vMotion, storage, mgmt, etc will also need their own logical switches ? like they had the VLANs with vDS

without the logical switch for the use of VXLAN VTEPs, how can we extend the L2domain meant for vMotion over the L3 network ?

Regards,

Nilesh

Hi,

I would not suggest vmotion and mgmt on a logical-switch.
NSX uses a vlan on the dvswitch.

Management should also be on the dvswitch with a vlan. In case of issues with NSX, you can alsways reach the esx host for troubleshooting.

Regarding vmotion L2 extention, you can use L3 vmotion.

See Managment and vMotion on L3

Thank you for the feedback.

I was under wrong impression that with the extension of the Layer 2 domain we should also be able to move VMs across Layer 2 underlay boundaries.

However, now I understand that while extension of the layer 2 domain does helps to place VMs in the same layer 2 domain even if they are in separate underlay layer 2 domain, this should not be looked as to move the VMs into different underlay layer 2 domain.
