NSX-T Edge Appliance Requirements (AES)

Jump to solution

Hi Folks,

I have a vSphere/NSX-V environment as my lab running on some older hardware: Dell R710s. I have created a nested lab for vSphere/NSX-T.

Upon logging into my deployed (via OVF) NST-X Edge appliances, I see the following error messages:

* ERROR:  NSX Edge configuration has failed. The host does not support required cpu features: ['aes'].

This shows up in the NSX-T manager GUI Fabric > Nodes > Edges as Deployment Status "Configuration Error". No further action is allowed on the Edges such as promoting them as Transport Nodes and getting them added to the Transport Zone. Therefore, I'm stuck in my installation.

Note: My physical CPUs are Intel XEON L5520 (Built in Q1-09). According to Intel, AES didn't show up until 2010: https://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/intel-advanced-encryption-standard-instructions-aes-ni. Is there a way to emulate this hardware in software to get passed this?

Thank you very much!

Michael

Yes, you are correct. I'm seeing there is no workaround without additional material.

Yesterday, I placed an order for 10x Intel Xeon L5640 processors. I looked up my server's documentation and found a page on supported processors and further found this specific one based on price/performance.

Thanks for the response.
