About NSX Manager CLI Login hpet 1: lost 5 rtc interrupts

NSX Version:6.4 and 6.3

Hello.

When logging in to NSX Manager with CLI, the following log is displayed.

[6102953.422082] hpet 1: lost 5 rtc interrupts

I think that there is no problem because it is also displayed in another NSX Manager.

However

I am two-sided.

① What is the meaning of this log?

② Even if this log is displayed, is NSX Manager operating normally?

Hi networlddsg,

I have seen this console message reported on just about every NSX Manager appliance I've worked on. It's normal and has no impact on the normal operation of the manager.

I suspect the kernel is reporting HPET (high precision event timer) messages to the console output by default. I'm going to see if we can get these suppressed in a future release.

Regards,

Mike

HPET stands for High Precision Event Timer.

RTC stands for real time clock.

If I were to have a guess, it is likely related to timekeeping/setting the system clock. So the system clock might experience some drift but most likely nothing too serious considering the low miss count (5).

Could the ESX and vCenter versions be not in the compatibility list,

Is it possible to check the ESX and Vcenter versions are compatibile:

3 important ponts could be ESX, vCenter and previous NSX versions:

https://vswitchzero.com/2018/01/17/nsx-6-4-0-upgrade-compatibility/

ESX

https://partnerweb.vmware.com/comp_guide2/sim/interop_matrix.php#interop&93=&1= https://partnerweb.vmware.com/comp_guide2/sim/interop_matrix.php#interop&93=&2=

VCenter

https://partnerweb.vmware.com/comp_guide2/sim/interop_matrix.php#interop&93=&2=

Has NSX been upgraded from a  supported previous version:

https://partnerweb.vmware.com/comp_guide2/sim/interop_matrix.php#upgrade&solution=93

For the same error this thread mentions that it is related with virtual HW Clocking Mechanism selected.

HPET: High Precision event timer

RTC: Real time clock

hpet1: lost 1 rtc interrupts

Does this counter increase, or stays at 5? If it doesn't change there could be some temporary problem causing this problem, if this number is increasing rapidly  this could produce performance problems for  the NSX Manager.

If NSX Managers are on same ESX, this could be related to hardware, it could be checked if the NSX Manager is vmotioned to another (type of) ESX host and compare

@networlddsg,

I don't have NSX Manager.

My reply to you was on the very basic understanding I have about timers within (physical and virtual) machines. VMware VMs can also have virtual HPET.

If your question was in the context of a Linux machine (or even VM) that you saw this message about hpet losing rtc interrupts in dmesg, the ramifications could be aside from timekeeping/system clock, the effects could be on audio playback, perhaps garbled sound or broken sound.

Thanks for your comment.

A log is displayed for several minutes.

The count continues to increase.

Thanks for your comment.

I was relieved because all NSX Manager is displaying it.
