After a successfull deployment with VIO 3.1 and NSX, I was looking for the external network to provide floatings IPs to instances but it seems not be created by default.
I didn't find any information about the creation of this external network with NSX in VIO documentation.
Which type of physical network must be used with NSX ?
did you start taking a look at:
You can attach a floating IP address to an instance in addition to the fixed IP address that is assigned when it is created. Unlike fixed IP addresses, you can modify floating IP address associations at any time, regardless of the state of the instances involved.
Option | Description |
---|---|
IP Address | Click the plus sign to add an IP address. |
Ports to be associated | Select a port from the list. The list shows all the instances with their fixed IP addresses. |
(copied from documentation)
Please, let me know what it is not clear.

Domenico
Before being able to attach a floating IP, I have to create manually the external network, as explained in this link: https://blogs.vmware.com/openstack/vmware-integrated-openstack-video-series-working-with-networks/
After this action, a floating IP pool was available.
cool!
so... issue fixed!
Yes
By default, after a deployment, the floating IP pool should be available without any action ?
sorry for the late reply!
floating ip address should be available without any action if the external network has been correctly configured.
The following is an external network example:
Status Active
Admin State UP
Shared No
External Network Yes
MTU Unknown
Provider Network
Network Type: portgroup
Physical Network: dvportgroup-152
and the following a subnet:
Subnetpool None
IP version IPv4
CIDR xx.xx.32.0/20
IP allocation pool Start xx.xx.xx.219 - End xx.xx.xx.222
Gateway IP xx.xx.xx.254
DHCP Enable No
Additional routes None
DNS name server xx.xx.xx.xxx
Please, take a look at the following thread too:$$$ Offered for vExpert ! it can be useful.
Cheers,
Domenico
