Hi - my first post - vmware questions but I want to determine if I'm in the right place

Hi,

I'm a non-technical legal secretary. I work remotely, using VMWare and working within/on a virtual environment ("virtual desktop" they call it at work). I will ask my questions below, assuming I am in the right place.

I have some recurring problems working within my company's setup, and I am guessing that it has something to do with VMWare. My issues stump my Help Desk IT team. So I was recently issued a new computer but I still have the same problems, listed below.

1. I use a foot pedal that I have connected to my laptop via USB-C. My foot pedal does not engage with the transcription software (For the Record) when I get the message "USB is unavailable." Ordinarily I would see a list of items that are either on or off (and I can toggle) such as Quanta HD Camera, PI Engineering VEC USB Footpedal, Intel(R) Wireless Bluetooth (R) are 3 examples of what I see when all is working well. When not, I see "USB unavailable" on the USB dropdown.

IT Help desk's suggestion is for me to log off, restart and log in again. Most of the time this doesn't work immediately - it works after 5 or 6 times of logging off, etc. This seems like a clumsy 'solution.' The last time I had this problem, I logged off/on about 10 times ---the 9th time I got the appropriate USB message (that states a list of items that are either on or off, as above) BUT I COULD NOT GET MY OTHER APPLICATIONS TO OPEN. Word, Excel and Outlook would not open, just spin. Even Teams, which opens up automatically at the beginning of my session, would not open. I logged off/restarted/logged in for the 10th time - and yes, I got the message "USB unavailable" and I could not use my foot pedal. Where do you think is the location of my problem? It seems like VMWare to me... I don't know

Does my description of the problem inspire any words of wisdom about where/how this problem is located?

2. My second problem is: my microphone does not work during Teams meetings. I check all the settings - within Teams, within Settings on the virtual machine, and within Settings on the local machine. I speak, and the microphone picks up sound (but I can't test the sound in Teams; there's nothing there that allows me). So even though my microphone appears to work, within Teams meeting, no one can hear me. In contrast, my microphone works fine with Zoom (but my company prefers Teams). Is this a VMWare problem? A configuration problem?

3. A 3rd problem - there are some tools made specifically for the law firm that I use (to insert cross references, for example). The tool on my new laptop comes in tiny - so tiny that I can't see everything. HelpDesk remoted in, acknowledged my problem, and worked on the document I was working in -- and they could not replicate my problem. Their tool loaded in in the right dimensions. I don't think this is a vmware problem per se, but I'm hoping that one of you smart people will tell me where to steer this question. About this 3rd problem -- I did not have this problem on my old laptop, so it seems to me that the problem somehow stems from a configuration of the laptop.

Good people can you help with your thoughts and speculations? Thanks very much for reading this.

Firstly I would respectfully say that you are in the wrong place. I will however offer some un-solicited or best guess 'solutions' to your possible issues. There is a reason companies have their own internal IT help desks and that there tend not to be general IT help desks that cover all companies and individuals. This is mainly due to the sheer number of variables there can be in any given IT issue. In your example you offer that you might be working with a virtual desktop, you also suggest that you are using a company supplied laptop. I will make the assumption that your company is using something like VMware Horizon View and that you are using the laptop as a glorified thin client. The problem appears to be in this case, that your "virtual desktop" is unable to successfully connect to and use any of the laptops local USB ports (pass through). There can again be multiple reasons for this, your companies IT department should have the configuration pre-setup and tested for you. That it is not working suggests that they have an issue in their configuration, which might be unique to the devices you are trying to connect. This is not a "VMware" issue, but an issue specific to your companies IT setup. The only people who are likely to have the access and tools to help you are your companies IT guys/help-desk. Sorry not to be of more assistance.

Sounds like the product in use is Horizon? (VMware have MANY different products)

Your IT team should hopefully have a support contract in place with VMware, if so they can open a support request on your behalf.

Although I am a VMware employee I contribute to VMware Communities voluntarily (ie. not in any official capacity)

Vmware rtav is not proper implemented. It can be also the Version of the endpoint client.

i can Tell you That your setup is definatly working we have hundreds of Sessions running with foot Pedal. A big layer company for example is using all that stuff
