This is a list of 3D applications (probably mostly games) that people have found to work with Fusion. Feel free to add your findings to the document, but keep questions in the comments. You can edit the document by selecting "Edit document" under Actions in the left sidebar. Please try to keep your results up to date with the most recent build; you probably want to remove your own outdated entries to keep this document reasonably short.
This list does not guarantee that a particular application will work for you, and does not imply support from VMware.
To enable 3D acceleration, shut down (suspend doesn't count) the virtual machine and go to Virtual Machine > Settings > System Hardware > Display. Check the "Accelerate 3D graphics" option. You must also install VMware Tools. If you previously used Fusion 1.x, remember to upgrade the virtual hardware if you haven't done so.
As of version 3.0, VMware Fusion offers experimental support for DirectX 9.0c with Shader Model 3 and OpenGL (2.1 when using the XPDM driver, 1.4 when using the WDDM driver).
Which application you tested, and what version of the application.
What Guest OS you are using, and what version of the OS.
What version of OS X you are using (e.g. 10.5.8, 10.6.2).
Which version of Fusion you tried this with; for example, 215242 for 3.0.1. This information can be found under VMware Fusion > About VMware Fusion. Unless you say otherwise in the notes, it is assumed the installed version of VMware Tools matches the build number. Try to keep the list sorted by this value, newest version at the top .
Type of Mac (e.g. Mac Pro, iMac, etc.) and graphics card (e.g. nVidia GeForce 7300 GT, ATI Radeon X1900 XT, etc.). Readers should keep in mind that Macs with integrated graphics (i.e. mini, MacBook) don't completely support OpenGL 1.4, which is necessary for proper guest 3D acceleration. As of Fusion 2.0, much of our internal testing is with the nVidia 8800 GT and ATI HD 2600, as we've found those have the best (i.e. least buggy) drivers.
This will make it easier to figure out who to ask if other people have questions about setup. Also, get credited for your work
Anything others need to know, e.g. known issues, tweaks, links to HOWTOs, etc.
Applications that run perfectly or have minor problems that do not greatly affect usage. Similar to a Platinum or Gold rating on WineHQ AppDB list.

Strong Bad's Cool Games for Attractive People | XP Pro, SP2 | 10.5.5 | 2.0 (116369) | Macbook Pro (nvidia 8600) | TheLoneVM | Played Episode 1 demo |
Stronghold 2 Deluxe v1.4.1 | XP Pro, SP3 | 10.6.3 | 3.0.0 (198580) | iMac i5 27" (2.66GHz), 8GB DDR3 1067MHz RAM, ATI Radeon HD 4850 | jonnymorris | Without the two updates that the game automatically finds online this game has some graphical problems - buildings disappear, there are some large artifacts on screen, and sometimes it just bombs completely. With the two updates downloaded and installed up to version 1.4.1 with recommended graphics settings the game runs almost flawlessly (occasional building does not display), scrolling can be a little choppy when there's a lot going on though. I allocated two cores to this XP Pro VM, I suspect Stronghold 2 Deluxe should work just as well with one core (will try this next). Hint: use the arrow keys to quickly scroll around the game area. UPDATE: Works great on maximum graphic detail levels! I set the resolution to 1440x900 85Hz, there isn't a choice for the iMac's native 2560x1440. Works fine with just one CPU core allocated to the VM. |
Supreme Commander | Windows XP, SP3 | 10.6.3 | 3.1.0 (254806) | MacBook Pro (GeForce 8600M GT) | hobbit | The release candidate build improved speed a bit, game can get laggy with high unit counts |
TOCA Race Driver 3 | Windows XP, SP3 | 10.5.5 | 2.0 (116369) | iMac 3.06GHz (Early 2008) 8800GS | JMarkevich | Turn down graphics quality one notch and turn off hi-res reflections. |
The Sims 2 | XP Pro, SP3 | 10.5.4 | 2.0b1 (89933) | Macbook Pro (GeForce 8600 GTM) | Nickhamm | Flawless; low FPS |
The Sims | XP Pro, SP3 | 10.5.4 | 2.0b1 (89933) | Macbook Pro (GeForce 8600 GTM) | Nickhamm | Flickery top bar and "Sticky" graphics |
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield | XP Pro, SP2 | 10.5.1 | 1.1 (62573) | Mac Pro (GeForce 7300) | InflatableMouse | Intro movies stutter, Enter/Return skips them. Use vmmouse.present = "FALSE" vmx flag. |
Tomb Raider: Anniversary | XP Pro, SP2 | 1.1rc1 | MacBookPro (Radeon x1600) | nathanp | Slows down (high CPU) when textboxes appear, hitting windows key and going back into the game fixes this
Tony Hawk 3 | Windows XP, SP2 | 1.0 (51348) | VMware
Torchlight (Runic Games) | W7 Home Premium | 10.6.1 | 3.0 | iMac 24" 2008 (3.06ghz Duo, 4 GB RAM, Nvidia 8800GTS) | DrHockey | Runs smoothly. Suggest running Fusion and game in full screen mode as there seems to be an issue reconciling resolutions between the game and the OS when Fusion is running in a window. |
Total Annihilation | XP Pro, SP3 | 10.5.5 | 2.0 (116369) | Mac Pro (ATI X1900XT) | DarylF2 | Works well, sometime a box appears around cursor but is just a minor distraction; performance is quite good. |
Warcraft III: Frozen Throne | XP Pro, SP2 | 10.5.1 | 1.1 (62573) | Macbook (1.8 Ghz) 2gb ram - GMA950 | James Snell | Graphics feel a bit lagged, but game seems resonably playable. Minor text bugs at main menu - a character missing from version number - occational stuff like that |
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War: Soulstorm Demo | XP Pro, SP2 | 10.5.5 | 2.0 (116369) | MacBook Pro (GeForce 8600M GT) | etung | Works well |
Wizards and Warriors | XP Pro, SP2 | 10.5.5 | 2.0 (116369) | Mac Pro (ATI2600) | TheLoneVM | Great nod to the old Wizardry games. Needs a couple of patches to get it going, see http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/44338-13-wizards-warriors-patch-both |
World in Conflict | XP Pro, SP2 | 10.5.5 | 2.0 (116369) | Mac Pro (NV8800/ATI2600) | TheLoneVM | Some audio/video sync issues during cutscenes, but gameplay runs great. |

XP Pro, SP2 | 10.4.11 | 1.1 (62573) | Mac Pro (GeForce 7300) | etung | Use vmmouse.present = "FALSE" vmx flag.
XP Pro, SP2 | 10.5.2 | 2.0b1 (89933) | Macbook Pro (GeForce 8600 GTM) | dpolombo | No bugs so far, but I had to set the graphics level almost to the minimum to make it playable (no shadows, water reflection, ...), and it remains slow.
XP Pro, SP2 | 1.1b1 (57919) | iMac (late 2006) (Radeon x1600) | aanhorn | some slowdown, otherwise playable
XP Pro, SP2 | 10.5.2 | 2.0b1 (89933) | Macbook Pro (Radeon Mobility x1600) | jackfaust | Sluggish, but playable.

It hangs a for a while when drawing the battlefield. Many objects aren't drawn and come and go as you move the camera. Other than choppy play, the main problem is that none of the superimposed graphics (text, selection boxes, etc.) appear. This one is almost semi-working. |

XP Pro SP3 | 10.5.4 | 2.0b2 (107508) | MacBook Pro 17", 2.5GHz Core2Duo, 2GB DDR2, NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT | darrylr | Goolge Earth start up and will appear to run for a while especially if you run in Safe Mode and have unchecked most options in the sidebar such as "Layers>Borders and Labels". However checking "Borders and Labels" or loading kml files that contain a large number of lines (several thousand) will reproducibly hang the virtual machine. Some of the lines are also often misdrawn before the virtual machine hangs. Often the hang also casues problems for the host OS with the host becoming unresponsive and requiring a reboot. Yes and OK Google Earth is not a game, but it uses DirectX, and I yes know it runs natively on Mac OS X, but I need to run with code that uses the OLE/.NET API only available on Windows.

I've gotten ffxi working to some degree though some characters don't render without shadows, also chat box only works when its in full screen mode, certain peices of armor or parts of armor don't render, some npc's/monsters won't render but their names are there. other than those problems it works nice x.x noticed that vmware has the refresh rate at 85 hertz whereas my monitor is only 60 hertz think that might be the issue? at least with some of the rendering? looks like once those issues are fixed it might be completely playable. oh I'm using the vmware fusion v1.1 release candidate on a mac pro w/nvidea 7300 256, 5g ram with 2g's for xp pro sp2
sorry if im posting in the wrong area i'm new here
This is the right area to post such things, though it is more efficient if you add your comments to the document rather than commenting. Comments don't scale well and will get out of date, and a table is much easier to quickly scan through.
Under the Actions box on the left, you can select "Edit document". Follow the existing format (it may be easiest to copy another entry and edit it).
COD4 not working either
I am posting a link to better describe the problem with Star Trek Starfleet command.

I'm having trouble loading Microsoft Movie Maker. Error: "cannot start because your video card does not support the required level of hardware acceleration or hardware acceleration is not available." I'm running Windows Vista as a guest on my host MacPro with 4Gigs of RAM and two Digital digital displays. The video cards are ATI Radeon x1900 XT in slot-1 and NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT in slot-2. Is there a way to get applications such as Movie Maker or Photoshop to work on the virtual vista machine? Any assistance is greatly appreciated.
Just tested Counterstrike 1.6 and Source with Fusion 2.0b
1.6: Playable at lower resolutions! Though all of the text in the settings pane is garbled beyond readable ... if this is fixed then this will work 100%
Source: Nearly playable .. no text rendering issues like 1.6 has, but there is slight lag even with the settings turned down
Have tested the following games using VMWare Fusion 1.1 (62573) - on iMac 10.4.11 with XP Pro SP2. Also has 2GB RAM & Radeon HD2600 graphic card.
Hospital Tycoon, Space Invaders (30th Anniversary Edition) and Caesar IV.
All install okay, but don't play.
Installed the new MMO game Age of Conan under a VM of XP running on a macbook pro.
Allocated 30g of HDD and 2g of ram, game just crashes with error
Game does not work, see pics
Warhammer Online works with VMWare Fusion 2.0 release candidate 1 -- took me a bit of messing around with different mouse stuff to get it to work, but I finally did.
The first problem I had was that the mouse buttons appeared to be sticky -- I would right click on someone in game to talk to them, and it would act like the right mouse button was held down after that, until I clicked again.
In windows, control panel, system -> hardware -> device manager -> mice and other pointing devices
I disabled the 2nd HID-compliant mouse ( there are 2 on my machine)
(if I disable the first one, the mouse stops working altogether)
I also uninstalled the vmware mouse driver
and windows reinstalled a ps/2 compatible mouse driver
I rebooted, then ran services.msc and stopped the vmware tools
that's basically it I think for the relevant stuff.
One other thing I did, that I think was not relevant
I installed the logitech setpoint drivers -- but when I go into their settings, none of the mouse options are available -- I believe because it is not detecting a logitech mouse -- which is why I suspect it's not relevant
pretty sure those are all the details -- when I look at the ps/2 compatible mouse properties in device manager, under advanced settings they are the default -- sample rate 100 reports / second, wheel detection 'assume wheel is present', input buffer length 100 packets, fast initialization is checked -- the mouse feels like it moves a bit slow in windows also
anyway -- hopefully this information helps someone else get warhammer online working
Anyone familiar with UT2004 Editor? This should be working if you set the Mouse Preferences to Always Gaming mode...
Ok, here's the scoop on how to get Lord of the Rings Online and/or Dungeons and Dragons Stormreach working. Both games use the same engine, and the problem revolves around UserPreferences.ini.
If this file exists, you can change AllowFakeFullScreen=True to AllowFakeFullScreen=False. That should fix the problem and let you play.
If the file doesn't exist, cut and paste the following into Notepad and save as UserPreferences.ini. Save in My Documents\Dungeons and Dragons Online\ or My Documents\The Lord of the Rings Online\. You may need to create the sub directory. BE SURE TO BACK UP YOUR CURRENT FILE JUST IN CASE!

Don't see Second Life on either list. I keep getting a non-supported video driver issue. Any suggestions?
I don't see Dark Age of Camelot in the Compatibility List, so I thought I give some info on how it works on Fusion. I have a 3 year old Mac Pro 2.66 Xeon Quad Core with an ATI 3870 graphics card (I used to have a Geforce 7300). My OS is Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6). So far I've been pleasantly surprised to see how well Camelot plays on Fusion. The frame rates don't drop, and graphics for the most part look good. There are a few quirks with the game; water and fire do not look right and certain effects (such as life-drain on a Bonedancer) our not transparent. Overall playing Camelot on fusion is enjoyable. If VMWare can get some the graphic issues fixed I won't ever again have to go back to Boot-Camp to play the game.
VMWare seems to be ignoring this one. I wish they would respond.
Following up on someone else's earlier post (http://communities.vmware.com/thread/146930) I'd like to know if Supreme Commander will now run in VMWare Fusion 3. Yeah, yeah, I know that even if it does run, it'll be slow... but somehow it's just the principle of the thing and I want to know if (slowness aside) it could work.
I upgraded to Fusion 3.0. Titan Quest: Immortal Throne now works with no problems. Unfortunately, Dark Age of Camelot still has problems. I still can not use reflective water; all I see is a spiral pattern with no reflectivity. Certain effects such as life drain or certain flame animations are not transparent. I also had to turn off dynamic shadows. With dynamic shadows turned on, Jordhiem, Camelot and all the three major cities looked white with just a pale texture on it. When I turned Dynamic Shadows off the Major cites appeared normal.
Fusion did improve certain things. The game is certainly snappier. I didn't do any test but it did seem to have a faster frame rate. I can now see the compass which I could not do in version 2.0.6. Another problem that was fixed with Fusion 3. 0 was the ground lighting issue. During night scenes certain parts of the ground would appear as if it were day; this is no longer an issue. With Fusion 3.0. the ground looks like it should, with no problems.
Dark Age of Camelot almost works in Fusion 3.0. If VmWare can get water reflection working, and fixed the issues with transparency I won't have to go back to boot-camp to play the game.

Can you describe your setup in more detail? I'm on a Mac Pro / 12GB / Snow Leopard / Fusion 3 / NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT and Titan Quest Immortal Throne has rendering problems. I've got the video settings at default running 1280 x 1028 resolution. I'd love to get this game to work in Fusion 3 instead of rebooting into Bootcamp to play. Any advice or help is appreciated.
I'm on a 3 year old Mac Pro 2.66 Quad Core with 11 GB of RAM. My Graphics card is an ATI 3870 (replaced my burned out Geforce 7300). With Fusion 2.06 only the first Titan Quest worked; Titan Quest: Immortal Throne was buggy. Immortal Throne is working nicely with Fusion 3 although I'm still having issue with Dark Age of Camelot.
can anyone confirm or deny getting Anarchy Online (funcom MMO) to work in Fusion 3.0
Edit document is not an option for me so I am putting my info down here.
Application, Version: Roblox version number? current on 07.19.10
Guest OS Windows Vista Current updated as of 07.19.10
Mac OS 10.5.8
Fusion build Version 2.0.7 (246742)
Mac: iMac intel Core 2 Duo 2.8 GHz with 4GB Ram
Mostly Usable
Must have "Always optimize mouse for games" turned on in Fusion Preferences to work. Some mousing difficulties remain on periphery of window but game is playable. Some surfaces don't render correctly: reflective metal renders as all white. Some lag but it could be our network or that I have too much going in Mac. Will test more.

Working Well
Once I work out the button issues with function keys, option, control and other variables between the Windows and Mac keyboards this application works fine in spite of its high system requirements. It's advisable to change the function keys to work as function keys on the Mac side. Some testing required to see which key does what. Only some slowdown when doing very intensive processes but this would be expected in a native Windows machine too. Be sure to shut down intense Mac apps like Photoshop when using Max
