The Mac OS allows one to zip files--control click and Create Archive of....
What program (free hopefully) on the Windows side would one need to open these Mac archived files?

Windows XP has a built-in Zip program that should be able to decompress a Mac OS X created Zip file without problems. Otherwise, there are a number of zip programs out there including free versions of Stuffit Expander and trial versions of WinZip.
