vmToolsd.exe

Have been monitoring performance and finding that vmToolsd.exe is taking 100% of cpu, resulting in poor performance under some conditions. Stopped the process in Windows Task Manager and that takes care of the immediate problem. But it recurs. There are some references to uninstalling this program in Windows | Control Panel | Programs and Features.

Would one of you please explain how best to proceed.

vmtoolsd.exe is a vmware tools service. There is no harm in reinstalling VMware Tools. To do that go to control panel and uninstall VMware Tools from programs list. Then install VMware Tools by clicking on Virtual Machine on the navigation bar at top and select Install VMware Tools.

To isolate the issue, try out the following

1) Are you using any antivirus programs in windows? If yes try disabling it for few mins and check the cpu usage.

2) Perform clean boot of Windows . ( disable all startup items except for vmware related entries ) . Check the cpu usage in task manager.

To do that click on windows start > run > type " msconfig.msc" without quotes.

Go to startup items and disable all startup items except for vmware related entries.

Reboot VM and observe.
