ubuntu login issues

i just freshly installed ubuntu 9.1 on vmware fusion yesterday, but now the login repeatedly fails. i open fusion, start up my ubuntu vm, and the login screen comes up (like it should). However, after i put in my password, the machine starts to load the desktop and succesfully plays the login music, but right as my desktop is about to display it automatically cuts right back to the login screen. this cycle repeats over and over. i have tried restarting the ubuntu vm, restarting my host computer, everything i can think of. this happened to me before on a different ubuntu virtual machine. anybody have any ideas?? thanks!!

I've seen this a few times. Boot into the safe mode console and make sure VMware Tools has been recompiled for your current kernel (sudo vmware-config.pl -d), then restart the guest.
