after i change the disk size from 16G to 128G in Ubuntu 64-bit with my MacBook.
i could see any icon and anything in my ubuntu after i login. just the wallpaper.
also i couldn't call out the terminal : alt control t / alt control f2 / alt f2 /
Can you try to disable 3D acceleration in VM settings-->Display and see if the problem persists?
