macOS Sierra + VMWare Fusion 8.5 : external drive ejected on quitting !

Hi everyone,

Recently, about 1 year ago, I switched from MacOs to Linux because of El Capitan's regression upon it's predecessor.

When macOs Sierra came out, I gave it a try and all problems were solved, so I kept it...

But of course wanted to keep an eye on Linux.

So I took Fusion 8.5, installed it and set-up my favourite Linux distro.

Everything works quite well with no hangs or problems...

Until I decide to quit VMWare.

When I quit it almost ALWAYS ejects my USB hard drives, even though they aren't used by any VM used 😞

Which is quite annoying because those hard drives do host some VM running on Virtual Box 😞

And those are used as server VM's for people to reach it from outside.

So this is a real bug for me.

Anyone else has it ?

Is VMWare aware of it and is a patch to be expected ?

Hi FusionPenguin,

This is not a Fusion bug actually. Fusion never eject any USB device from Host. After you un-install the VirtualBox, the USB external drive will not be ejected while Fusion quit. I remember someone has already reported this issue to Oracle.

So I will uninstall VirtualBox...

Who needs it anyways, when we have VMWare Fusion ?

I'm experiencing the exact same symptoms as FusionPenguin, but I don't use VirtualBox at all. My Mac is running OS X 10.11.6, El Capitan.

I have an external USB hard drive, which is split into four partitions. Almost (but not quite) every time I quit Fusion, those drives are immediately disconnected and OS X pops up four notifications saying that the drives were disconnected improperly. The drives never spontaneously disconnect at other times, so the correlation strongly implicates Fusion as at least partially responsible.

Thanks for confirming the problem Kim...

After the answer that has been made, I uninstalled VirtualBox.

But : still the same problem.

It happens on quitting VMWare... or now relaunching it.

Which is quite annoying as a problem 😞

So a workaround would be appreciated.

Virtual Box un-installed.

Fusion re-installed.

Still the same problem...

As soon as I quit Fusion, the USB disk that are connected to a USB-3.1 PCU card inserted on my MacPro are ejected.

So maybe something about the PCI card ?

It would be mice if Kim would tell how the drive's are connected to his/her computer...

I was able to reproduce your issue when I have both Fusion and Virtual Box installed on host. But after I removed Virtual Box from my host machine, the unexpected ejection of USB device can not be reproduced anymore. I'm not sure whether it is caused by your USB-PCI card, but would you please try connect the USB device directly to host instead of using the USB 3.1 PCI card?
