gcc version mismatch on tools install with latest Ubuntu 8.04 kernel

I recently updated to the latest stable kernel (kernel 2.6.24-21) in my Ubuntu 8.04 VM, after which I restarted Ubuntu and tried to reinstall VMware tools, but the installer warned:

Your kernel was built with "gcc" version "4.2.3", while you are trying to use
"/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.2.4". This configuration is not recommended and
VMware Tools may crash if you'll continue. Please try to use exactly same
compiler as one used for building your kernel.

This seems like an Ubuntu issue, not a VMware one, but I thought I'd mention here that I've asked about it in the Ubuntu forums, so if you're experiencing this problem and looking for a solution, one may eventually be posted there:

Also, does anyone know if the mismatch is really a problem or not? I.e. will it really crash tools in this case?
