fusion tools install for ubuntu

reference: macbookpro w/ 4gig and osx=10.5.4 ubuntu=8.04 vmware=1.13

this noob tried a few times to install vmware tools into the ubuntu w/o success

so need a somewhat detailed method if anyone has the time

noob here to so bear with me..

this is how i got it installed...

open the cd image and right click the .tar file.. select extract to desktop

open terminal..

cd /Desktop/vmware-tools-distrib

./vmware-install.pl

keep hitting enter to accept the default values..

I believe you will have to use 'sudo' before running the command. Open a terminal window and navigate to the location that you installed the files. After that type 'sudo xxxxxxx.xxx' (I forget the exact name of the file to run but basically replace the xxxxxx.xxx with the correct filename) and just accept the defaults. This will install it for you. Basically your standard account does not have admin rights per se. Using sudo allows the program to function as a SU.

VMware Fusion menu bar > Help > VMware Fusion Help > Creating Virtual Machines > Installing and Upgrading VMware Tools > To Install or upgrade VMware Tools in a Linux virtual machine from the command line with the tar installer

Note: Ubuntu 8.04 at the present time is not supported and the version of VMware Tools shipped with Fusion does not properly install. See for a workaround.
