can fusion boot from usb (3) drive?

there was an old discussion about this, Re: Can Fusion boot from USB Drives?

this is useful to experiment with booting parameters and setup.

so I tried the plop boot manager, and although a starfield-background prompt allows me to select a device (incl usb), and although I know that my USB (3) stick is connected at this point, I still get on the next screen "Boot Error\nno boot device found, please retry it."

is anyone successfully booting USB sticks as of 2014 on vmware fusion 7.0.1?  if so, how?

USB 3 support is dependent on the guest OS - you might try with a USB 2.0 device and see if that works.

This is a commonly asked question (googling results in dozens of hits over several years) and there is still no authoritative answer.

I have used plpbt.iso in the past, but this is a bit hacky. There is also the suggestion to use make the USB drive a physical disk, but I haven't made this work with Fusion.

Can we please have official documentation on how to boot a VM from a USB drive ?
