Windows virtual machine on Mac OSX fails to mount remote disc on first reboot after installation

I followed the instructions in KB 1013659 Using the Macbook Air's and Mac Mini's Remote Disc feature with Fusion.

I am installing Windows XP on a MacPro running Mavericks 10.9.3. VMWare version 5.05.

The Windows OS installs properly, but upon the first reboot the Remote Disc is automatically dismounted. And then this error displays:

The operation on file "/dev/disk1" failed.

If the file resides on a remote file system, make sure that the network connection and the server where this disk resides are functioning properly. If the file resides on removable media, reattach the media. Select Retry to attempt the operation again. Select Cancel to end this session. Select Continue to forward the error to the guest operating system.

Continue    Cancel     Retry

Manually remounting the remote disc and pushing the Retry button does nothing but redisplay the error message. Continue or Cancel eventually lead to nowhere.

Any ideas how to get around this problem?

Make an ISO and use that to install.
