Windows update (and other windows) flickering terribly

Hi all,

i just have updated my virtual pc from windows 10 1909 to 2004.

Then after upgrade, i had another look into the windows update ... The window is flickering terribly. repair vmware tools didnt help.

Host os: os/x 10.13.6, mac pro 2010 / 5.1

fusion: 11.1.1

Windows before upgrade to 2004: 1909 build 18363.900

after upgrade: 2004, build unknown

What can i do?

osx cannot be updated, the mac is too old.

greetings from germany, Christian Stüben

this is what i did meanwhile...

- upgrade to 10.5.3 and changed the renderer as you have shown: no success

- installed fusion 11.5.3: no success

hmm, bad luck for me? then found another mks. setup in the vmx file...

- changed mks.enable3d to FALSE ... SUCCESS!

Maybe it is the sum of changing renderer, 11.5.3, and disabling 3d.

Funny error. Is there a "report problem to vmware" page ?

Hi,

You should be able to upgrade (for free) to VMware Fusion 11.5.3

See also:

https://kb.vmware.com/kb/2088571

Starting with VMware Fusion 11.5.5 the minimum host OS requirements are macOS 10.14.

If that doesn't help then you can try to switch off the metal renderer.

Especially on older hardware that tends to help.

You can do that by adding these lines to the .vmx file (with the VM shut down)

mks.enableMTLRenderer = "FALSE"
mks.enableGLRenderer = "TRUE"

This will enable the openGL renderer instead.

Hello Wil,

thank you for the hints. According to the compatibility table you have linked, fusion 11.5.0 is the newest version i can run on my osx 10.13.6.

I just tried to "search for updates", an i am guided to a fusion 11.5.5 that is shownin the table as NOT compatible to my osx.

Is there a download area for older versions? Or where can i get the 11.5.0?

Hi,

Hope that helps with your issues.

You should be able to upgrade to 11.5.3, the host OS requirement changes at 11.5.5 (there is no 11.5.4)

The download link for that is here: Download VMware Fusion 11.5.3

Thenks for the hints to the mks. setups and 11.5.x, they gave the initial "where to search first".

typing error in first step ... delete 10.5.3, insert 11.5.0 so it reads "upgraded to 11.5.0"

Found the easiest fix for me on MacBook Pro 2019, I went into preferences and under General, I selected appearance from auto to Light and my windows stopped flickering. Running VM Ware version 12.1 and Windows 10 version 20H2
