some gparted LiveCDS have mouse problems when you run them in a VM created for a Windows guest.

The result is often unusable because the mouse moves unpredictable and you can't do anything useful with it

To work around this make sure you select an appropriate Linux as guest OS for this boot. Select "Linux 2.6 other"

In some cases it is even necessary to use virtualhardware version 6

I have found that older gparted LiveCDs work better then the latest ones - as far as the mouse issue is concerned..

gparted is fine - I would rather use it then any obscure Windows apps - just make sure you run it as Linux then it is fine

how do you boot into it however - I mean do you stick the CD in the drive and then literally reboot windows (running on my mac) - will the Mac OS not pickup re the CD insertion?

I download the iso and then boot from that iso-file directly

hit ESC during start of the VM-bios screen and select the "boot from CD" option

Thought I'd chime to add some additional info. gparted works very well and will give you what you need very quickly. Here's a portion of a how-to I posted a while back for aligning XP Pro VM using gparted. Step 6 will help to eliminate the mouse problems (can be very frustrating). Also, I HIGHLY suggest making a VM copy before you start. Hope it helps!

Cheers!

1. Download latest Gparted Live iso and make a boot CD. Download from: http://gparted.sourceforge.net/download.php

2. Make a copy of your VM using WoodyZ’s simplified instructions below:

.....a. With the target Virtual Machine shutdown, not suspended...

.....b. Ctrl-click the target Virtual Machine entry in Virtual Machine Library and select Show in Finder and then close Fusion.

.....c. Ctrl-click the target Virtual Machine Package in Finder and select Duplicate and this will create a copy of the target Virtual Machine Package in the naming convention of " copy" and you can rename the Package by selecting it and pressing Enter

.....d. Open Fusion and drag and drop the copied/renamed Virtual Machine Package on to the Virtual Machine Library at which point you can change its display name from the Virtual Machine Library

.....e. The first time you start the copied/renamed Virtual Machine be sure to select "I copied it"

3. Start your VM copy to make sure everything is okay.

4. Shutdown the VM copy and change “Advanced” settings “Startup Device” to “CD/DVD”

5. Insert the Gparted Live boot CD and start your VM copy (may have to reboot if doesn’t boot to CD first time)

6. Go through the Gparted Live boot steps using the following settings

.....a. Select “Gparted Live (Default Settings)”

.....b. Select “Don’t touch keymap” for US English keyboards. If something else, select other option to map correct keyboard.

.....c. Select “US English” (default language) or select another.

.....d. Select “Run ‘Forcevideo’ to config X manually”

..........i. Select “800 x 600” ************THIS WAS THE FIX FOR MY MOUSE CURSOR LOCATION MAPPING “QUIRKS”

..........ii. Select “vesa” driver (default)

..........iii. Select color depth “24” (default)

.....e. Continue booting to the Gparted GUI
