When is disk space allocated?

When you create a virtual machine, but do not yet install the guest OS, is the space allocated on your disk?

It depends on how you create your VM. When you're creating it you have the option to have the virtual HDD allocate the space or not. By default it doesn't (at least when I just ran through it just now). On the Virtual Hard Disk step of the create new machine wizard, under Advanced Options, you can have it allocate all space on creation.
