What are background snapshots?

Upon resuming a suspended machine, I ran across this message:

Taking a snapshot is not instantaneous. When you take a snapshot with this option enabled, you can continue working while VMware preserves the snapshot in the background.

Background snapshots are a WS feature. They're enabled by default in Fusion, and you can't control them (you can't even take or restore snapshots!), and the message obviously needs to go away or be adjusted.
