VMware tools in Linux guest don't work anymore after update

Hello,

I upgraded to Fusion 3.1.3 and updated my Gentoo Linux guest with a lot of packages, new kernel 2.6.38 and installed the new VMware tools. vmware-install.pl ends with the following:

Starting VMware Tools services in the virtual machine:
   Switching to guest configuration:                                   done
   Paravirtual SCSI module:                                            done
   Guest filesystem driver:                                            done
   Mounting HGFS shares:                                               done
   Guest memory manager:                                               done
   VM communication interface:                                        failed
VM communication interface socket family:                          failed
   Blocking file system:                                               done
   VMware User Agent:                                                  done
   File system sync driver:                                            done
   Guest operating system daemon:                                      done
   Virtual Printing daemon:                                            done
Unable to start services for VMware Tools

Execution aborted.

However the vmci module has been loaded:

# lsmod | grep ^vm
vmblock                11686  1
vmmemctl                7487  0
vmhgfs                 51263  1
vmci                   25717  0

Where could I continue to look for what went wrong? I have not found any related log messages.

cu, Magnus
