VMware supports very few Windows games due to supported DirectX version too old

I can play Mac-native games like League of Legends, CS:GO, TF2 on my mid-2013 MacBook Air without issue, but modern games like Spelunky play at 1 FPS in VMware Fusion, and even older games like Mirror's Edge play at 10 FPS in VMware Fusion. We might as well ditch VMware completely and just boot a regular Windows host!

Could VMware please significantly improve the version of DirectX it supports?

I had a similar experience with Skyrim. According to Steam those games you mentioned require DirectX 9, as does Skyrim. Try changing the hardware version of your virtual machine to Hardware Version 10 and see if that helps at all. Doing this took Skyrim for me from 1-15 fps to a playable 28-40 fps.

In Fusion 8 we updated our graphics engine to support DirectX 10.

If you update your VM to Hardware Version 12 and uninstall and then install Tools, you should see a dramatic improvement.
