VMware Tools Installer Hangs with 2.0.5

I've just upgraded to Fusion 2.0.5 on OS X (10.5.6). The guest is Server 2003. When the Tools upgrade starts, it just hangs after about 4 blocks in the progress bar. This is creating all kinds of problems for the VM as apparently the old tools do not work properly. I urgently need some help getting them installed or an easy way to revert to the previous version. Thanks.

I figured out how to revert to 2.0.4, which cured my immediate problem, so the remaining issue is to determine when/how to update to 2.0.5. Thanks.

On the off chance that there is corruption somewhere in your current Tools, have you tried completely uninstalling the current version of Tools before installing the new one?

I have a similar problem. The bottom status bar reports VM Ware Tools is out of date.

Trying to 'Install' from the top Mac title bar does nothing except change the Mac menu option to 'Cancel VM Ware tools installation'.

I've Uninstalled VMWare Tools from inside Vista using the programs control panel.

That messed up all the display settings, which I have reset to what I want but ow I have no VMWare tools either installed apparently, or even in the Programs at all. Nor does any disk image appear.

How do I install VMWare tools?

You can manually access the VMware Tools installer with the following steps:

-While Vista is running, select CD/DVD > Choose a Disk Image... from the Virtual Machine menu in Fusion

-Navigate to Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/isoimages

-Select windows.iso and hit Open

-The installer will now apear in Vista as if it's a physical disk (should be d:)

-If the installer does it auto-launch, just open the VMware Tools disk from My Computer

Hope this helps.

Thanks Jon.

I have tried this and the Virtual Machine menu says once again 'cancel

VMWare Tools Installation'.

And, now in the same menu I have Virtual Machine > CD/DVD > Using disk image

(windows.iso) with the last menu item greyed out but with a tick beside it.

Also, there's no disk mounted anywhere under My Computer in Vista.

The VMWare Tools tray icon in Vista, on opening does not offer me an 'Update

Tols' button (well, it's greyed out).

Any ideas?

Thank you again!

Hi Richard,

It sounds like the ISO is connecting properly through Fusion. Try using the Run... command from Vista's Start menu, then type d:/ and hit enter. What is the system's response?

"d:\ refers to a location that is not available.... Etc etc"

Do you use the Vista VM with any other type of removable media (CD, DVD, USB Drive)? Do these items continue to work in Vista?

I can see USB drives (shows up as d:/), and all my virtual drives on the

host MacOS.

Interesting I cannot see the DVD drive, although VMWare says it's "using

physical drive" if I ask it to, and it says "CD/DVD: connected" normally

The version of VMWare I seem to be running (taken from the VMWare Tools

'about' tab) is 7.9.6 Build 173382

Hi Richard,

I was going to suggest placing the windows.iso file onto a usb drive and accessing it in Vista, but something in your last post has me a little confused. In your initial post you stated:

...have no VMWare tools either installed apparently, or even in the Programs at all. Nor does any disk image appear.

How do I install VMWare tools?

In your last post, you seemed to contradict this:

The version of VMWare I seem to be running (taken from the VMWare Tools

'about' tab) is 7.9.6 Build 173382

How were you able to obtain this information if VMware Tools is not installed in Vista?

I know Jon, it is confusing, sorry.

I have rolled back to a prior snapshot now as I was having multiple

problems: I was experiencing a desire to have some 'base system device'

driver installed, which could not be found. It was a mess - no dynamic

screen resizing etc.

Now with the prior snapshot, I have it running again, and I have lost the

"VMWare Tools is out of date message in the status bar".

I still have the option to "Update VMWare tools" in the MacOS title bar

under Virtual Machine, but when I open the VMWare Tools properties from the

Vista tray icon the 'update' button is greyed out.

I have 'mounted' the windows.iso disk image via the MacOS CD/DVD menu under

Virtual Machine and still canot see it in Vista.

However, Am I actually running OK now?

It's VERY confusing!

Hi Richard,

The version and build number you quoted is the current release of VMware Tools. The reason you cannot update is because there is nothing to update; in other words you should be fine. As for the image not mounting, restart Vista and try connecting to an actual CD or DVD.

Thanks Jon, you've been immensely helpful. I think the confusion is

precipated by the Virtual Machine menu item offering an 'Update VMWare

tools' option when it obviously isn't relevant.

On another note, given the way VMWare operates (i.e. It seems to be Fusion

under the Host that manages 'suspend/hiberation'), do I need to retain the

Vista Hibernation file (as revealed under Disk Cleanup)? Would ideally like

to dump it as it's 1.5GB.

Thanks!

Hi Richard,

You're absolutely right; You can delete this file by selecting Hibernation File Cleaner in Vista's Disk Cleanup. Glad I could be of help.
