I can get into the grub and boot menu.
But when I choose the core 5.8.
I will get black screen, and only a cursor.
I can normally get into system with core5.4.
But KaliLinux already close the support for linux-header-5.4.
How to boot with core 5.8
Are you trying to build it from scratch? if you download the pre-built VM's, they just work.
I'm having this same problem, with both an existing Kali VM I had that worked under Fusion 11, and with the latest prebuilt VMware image downloaded from https://www.offensive-security.com/kali-linux-vm-vmware-virtualbox-image-download/
