Danny Joe and elantric,

The reason you are hitting this issue is because you are running a very recent version of Mac OS (10.4.10 with Darwin version 8.10.3). As far as we know, you can only get that version of Mac OS when you have purchased your MaBook Pro very recently (for example, there is no way to update to that version with Software Update). That is why we didn't detect this problem in-house.

We are working on a fix for the final Fusion 1.1 release. In the meantime, you acen either downgrade Fusion (as explained by Ben), or upgrade to Leopard. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Just installed it on a 30-day old MacBook Pro. The moment I launched it with an existing VM running XP, the MBP crashed by slowly repainting the screen with a darker image of itself overlaid with a black box that said to restart the machine by holding down the power button. I retried after it restarted and got the same results. I'm reverting to the previous release. No choice if I want to get any work done. With Leopard due to arrive tomorrow, here's hoping that this either gets fixed overnight or that the prior release still works after installing Leopard.

Was your virtual machine Fusion VM or a Boot Camp partition? I just resumed my XP VM from 1.1b1 with no problems. Please attach /Library/Logs/panic.log and the vmware.log from the VM, if possible. panic.log would be more useful if you can only attach one log. Also I always reboot OS X after a Fusion upgrade, even though it is not necessary. I do that out of "an abundance of caution."

It was an XP Fusion VM. Crashed two times in a row, second time after having rebooted.

Here's the contents of the panic.log after the second restart:

I reverted back to the official 1.0 release and the crashing problem is resolved. One thing that is noteworthy is that when the VM started up under the reinstalled 1.0 version it displayed a dialog window to report that a duplicate network name exists on the network. And it is true. I have a VM running on another computer (a PC running Vista and VMWare Workstation 6.0) with the same computer name. If I go shut it down, then the one on this Mac will start right up. (I've encountered this before, whenever I forget to shut down the one on the PC.) Might this be the cause of the crash in the RC? I suppose there's one certain way to find out. But I'm adverse to deliberately crashing my MBP again. Poor thing has suffered enough for one night, never having crashed before!

It's not specific to the RC!

I had problems because:

the installer installs into /Applications and ignores your install location; this results in two VMWare Apps installed with all the niceties which can result. I had strange driver load errors until I remembered the issue and resolved it.

Could the installer be made a bit more intelligent, please?

Michael

I'm also having the same crashing problem as danny joe. Within 10 seconds after starting my WinXP Pro virtual machine, I get a crash with the message to hold down the power button to restart the computer. This always happens. I'm running a Santa Rosa core 2 duo Macbook Pro. But my big problem is I can not revert and install any prior version usng the fusion installer. Last month I started my VM Ware Fusion experience with the September 25 Fusion 1.1 beta release candidate(build 57919), using the online generated serial number . I liked the program so a week later I purchased a boxed version, but never opened the box. LAst night I updated to the Oct.25 Fusion 1.1 beta (build 61385) , and had nothing but the problems noted above. I figured I would run the uninstaller and open my fresh VM Fusion 1.0 CD and try installing that version(build 51348). But now I have a new problem, the VMWare Fusion installer gets midway through the installation, I select the destination (my hard drive) then the installer displays a message "You can not continue, there is nothing to install" - and I can not proceed! I thought perhaps I had a bad CDrom, so I downloaded the 1.0 demo and I get the exact same error message" "You can not continue, there is nothing to install".

How do I solve this. Is there still a download link for the working September 25 Fusion 1.1 beta release candidate(build 57919)???

I'm stuck for time being!!!! ouch!

I've attached the log files.

thanks

Steve

Hi,

I've no idea about all the output posted but just one observation...

Was the virtual machine suspended or actually shut down prior to upgrading and then starting it back up again? If it was suspended then I can't imagine that would really be a very good thing to do? I'd imagine making sure all your VMs were actually shut down would be best. Don't get me wrong, I don't normally bother to shut them down properly myself before an upgrade either but it's just a thought Smiley Happy

Of course if it wasn't suspended then "as you were"!!

Cheers,

Martin.

yes my WinXP machine it was "suspended"

All I did was get home , fire up my macbook pro, launch VMWARE Fusion , but I got a never before seen window stating an updated version of Fusion was available, and I stupedly clicked Update. Nothing but woes since then! Can I force close a suspended WinXP machine upon launching the latest beta? I'm currently lost and stuck! I'm about ready to reformat my drive and start fresh with leopard. I'm a new Mac convert, and this is the first time I have had a crash. I must admit I'm a newbie regarding debugging Mac application install issues, this is my 1st mac since my Mac Plus! been running and configuring windows machines for the past 20 years. I hate to say I really miss the WinXP System restore function! I guess the Mac does not have a similar function? I should have maintained a weekly hard drive backup. Right now I'm losing work until I can get my WinXP vrtual machine back up and running. But this BUGGY brain dead Fusion INSTALLER situation has left me with a bad impression of VM Ware - I really do think I'll pick up a copy of Leopard later today and use that for my path to WinXP on my mac. If I can get guidance on how to just install my purchased VmWare Fusion 1.0 disk - that would be great.

Does anyone want my "I Love my VMWARE" bumper sticker? I have no use for it anymore.

Ah, well to be honest then I would have thought that if you upgraded from within a built in updater then it ought to have been a fine thing to do!

Hi elantric,

We're debugging the kernel panic issue now. I'm really sorry for the inconvenience.

The issue with downgrading was fixed internally, but not before 1.1 RC was finalized.

You can manually move Apple's installer receipt files to convince it a downgrade is OK. Just rename or delete the files:

/Library/Receipts/Install VMware Fusion.pkg

and

/Library/Receipts/VMware Fusion.pkg

Please let us know if this works for you.

Ok - that fixed it! I'm back up and running using my paid for version 1.0 and extremely gun shy about running the latest 1.1 beta build.

I wish I kept my september 25 beta 1.1 build - that was working great for me. Any chance of a url link to redownload that?

You may want to fix that click to update to new version routine, or issue a few warnings.

The same crash is happening to me on a 2.4 GHZ Santa Rosa Macbook Pro.

Edited to include logs. I think my problem is related to SR and running 10.4.10.

Danny Joe and elantric,

Can you please run this command in a Terminal, and send me the file for_hpreg.tar.bz2 (look for it on your desktop) at hpreg@you_know_the_company.com?

tar -C /System/Library/Extensions -cjf ~/Desktop/for_hpreg.tar.bz2 IOHIDFamily.kext

Thanks!

Hello,

I've had VMWare RC crash on me (reported as SR 196847301 with crash log and whatnot).

I then restarted the VM (it seemed to have suspended the VM before crashing hard? Is that possible) and after a few minutes VMWare locked up (wouldn't respond to mouse input) and then Finder died, and eventually I had to powercycle the laptop.

Now it's up and running again.

I have the September Version 1.1 beta installed, but wanted to get ready for a Leopard install by moving up to the Version 1.1 RC. However, when I run the installer, I get a message that 'Fusion cannot be installed on this machine'. Is there a simple reason for this? Would it be safe to delete the Fusion package receipt and try again? Thanks.

Danny Joe and elantric,

We believe we have a fix for this "vmioplug" panic.

Here are instructions to test the fix before we wildly release it in

Fusion 1.1.

1) Install Fusion 1.1 RC 1 (build 61385) as before (i.e. I assume you

are still running Tiger).

2) Download these 2 files on your desktop

http://ftpsite.vmware.com/download/vmware-vmx

http://ftpsite.vmware.com/download/vmware-vmx-debug

3) Backup Fusion 1.1 RC 1 files and use the new files instead, by using

these commands in Terminal:

dir='/Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/vmx/Contents/MacOS'

sudo mv "$dir"/vmware-vmx "$dir"/vmware-vmx.old

sudo mv "$dir"/vmware-vmx-debug "$dir"/vmware-vmx-debug.old

sudo mv ~/Desktop/vmware-vmx "$dir"

sudo mv ~/Desktop/vmware-vmx-debug "$dir"

sudo chown root:wheel "$dir"/vmware-vmx

sudo chmod 4755 "$dir"/vmware-vmx

sudo chown root:wheel "$dir"/vmware-vmx-debug

sudo chmod 4755 "$dir"/vmware-vmx-debug

4) Restart your Mac

5) Start your VM, and click in it to send keyboard/mouse input to the

VM

If your Mac is still alive at this point, our fix is effective. Please

let me know and thanks for your help with this.

I experienced the crash described above on my Santa Rosa MacBook Pro running Darwin 8.10.3 and Mac OS 10.4.10. Subsituting the files posted fixed the crashes.

P.S. I noticed that the announcement page for v 1.1 RC build 61385 mentions "Improved 2D drawing performance, especially on Santa Rosa MacBook Pros", despite the fact that the reason for not catching this issue is stated to be a lack of accessibility to the hardware-specific update Apple issued for this platform. Either VMware is making claims that haven't been tested or is using outdated software (this update is not that recent and was issued for all Santa Rosa MacBooks). Either way, it is less than impressive...

The fix that you posted has resolved my issue. As soon as I upgraded fusion to the latest version my macbook pro started to panic each time I started my windows xp vm. After applying the fix everything is working fine. For the record my macbook pro was purchased in August.
