I lost access to my shared folders when I installed windows 8. I unclicked the folders , restarted the machine and then tried turning on and selecting folders which I can see in settings but now no shared folders at all shown in windows explorer . Any advice ?
So its sure then that the issue is with vmtools.
Try this then,
log into windows vm
ignore the error message ( if any related to shared folders comes ).
Go to the virtual machine settings > sharing
Disable sharing and turn off all the mirrors.
log off and log back into windows vm
install/reinstall vm tools .
restart the vm and turn on the sharing feature in vm settings.
if the issue persists, follow the instructions provided in the following article
Try reinstalling vm tools and check
Click on virtual machine menu and choose install / reinstall vm tools
when I try that I get
Error 1606 . Could not access network location\\vmware-host\Shared Folders\Documents\.

thanks very much for your help, that worked !!
Yes, thank you avanish321 ! I was having the same problem and it was driving me nuts. For some reason Win8 was not seeing the shared folder and reported either something wrong with the spelling or the network (it was like the vm shared folder name was truckated and not showing the full name). I could even finialize the installment of HP scanner software downloaded from HP's site. Followed your instructions a couple times, did VM Tool modify and the tools loaded but not connection to the shared folder and finally did a VM Tool repair following your instruction process and the shared folder finally appeared with the correct name and now everyone is talking. I did have to finally install my licensed retail Win7 and then the Win8 Upgrade to get everything smoothed out and then ran into the shared folder mess. Whewww...
Thanks again.....
