VMWare virtual network

I have the need to run my network as wired rather than wireless. I was running fine wireless. When i switched to wired, everything worked but my Vista VM (XP was fine). I looked around and found a difference. On ipconfig/all, I get the following:

Windows Vista

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :

Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Intel(R) PRO/1000 MT Network Connection

Windows XP

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :

Description . . . . . . . . . . . : VMware Accelerated AMD PCNet Adapter

Device manager in Vista shows my Network adapter as "Intel(R) PRO/1000 MT Network Connection." How do I get my adapter set to "VMware Accelerated AMD PCNet Adapter" in Vista.

20" iMac Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz

Mac OS X (10.5.2)

Fusion 1.1.2 (87978)

Windows XP Home SP2

Windows Vista Business SP1

I'm not sure I follow. Do you mean you need to connect your host to a wired network instead of a wireless because I don't think it matters (still new to vm's so take that advice with a big pinch of salt).

Some things to look at.

Do you have vmware tools installed in your Vista guest OS?

Are you using bridged, host only or NAT networking to connect your guest vm's to your network and are you using the same value for both your vista and XP vm?

I am using bridged. I am not getting the VMWare virtual adapter. I can't connect my Vista machine while wired. How do I get the virtual adapter to replace the Intel? VMWare tools are installed.

I think I am barking up the wrong tree. In further reading I believe I read that "VMware Accelerated AMD PCNet Adapter" is not supported in Vista and the "ntel(R) PRO/1000 MT Network Connection adapter is what I should see. However, I still can't get Vista connected when I disable my Mac OSX wireless adapter and plug in my ethernet cable. I am not a network person, but everything in Vista looks good. I just cannot connect. Any help would be appreciated.

Well lets start small and rule out the the basics, I don't have a vista vm to help but here are some steps that might help.

Do you have VMWare tools installed in your vista vm?

When you view the network settings of your vm (from Mac Menu bar [Virtual Machines -> Settings)

Is it "connected"?

You say you are using bridged in your vista vm is that the same setting you are using for your XP vm?

What happens if you change it to "Share the host's internet connection"

Mobfusion, thanks for the reply. I have made some progress since my last response. I got Vista to connect by using NAT. I would prefer to get a static IP, but I can live with this as I try to figure things out.

To answer your questions: Tools are installed. It is connected. Currently XP is also running NAT. Vista works with NAT.

I'll play with XP and bridged since I am more familiar with it than Vista.

When setting the Virtual Machine Network to Bridged there needs to be a way that the Virtual Machine's Bridged Network receives its Network Configuration Information, IP Address, Subnet Mask, Gateway and DNS Server Information, etc. This can be configured manually or automatically however if automatically then there needs to be a DHCP Server on the Subnet. An example would be an AirPort Extreme, Linksys Router, another Computer on the Subnet running DHCP Services, etc.

If your LAN does not provide such services then that may be why you cannot get Vista to work in Bridged mode and since it's able to work in NAT mode and not Bridged it suggest that there is nothing on you LAN providing such Services.

It might be helpful if you would provide information about you LAN's configuration.

How do you connect to the Internet, Cable Model, DSL Modem, etc.

Does the Host (Mac) connect directly to the aforementioned or is there a Router in play and if so why type, etc.

Have a look at to fill in some of the blanks.

Woody,

I have a D-Link DI-264 router connected to Verizon FIOS. Currently, my iMac is connected to the router with an ethernet cable. If I connect my iMac wireles, XP and Vista have no problems connecting. With my current configuration, to my eye, everything looks good, but Firefox gets connecting to xxx.yyy.zzz, and Server not found. If I try to connect to my router, I get get connecting to 192.168.0.1 and then "The connection has timed out." IIn bridged mode, I have tried both automatically get IP address and manual, no difference. Currently my setup is manual. Here is my ipconfig /all output, both NAT (that works) and bridged (does not work):

I have found something new I cannot explain. I saw in another thread ( http://communities.vmware.com/thread/82635?tstart=0 ) something about DNS and NAT. I tried the nslookup and got the following:

C:>nslookup www.yahoo.com

DNS request timed out.

timeout was 2 seconds.

      • Can't find server name for address 71.252.0.12: Timed out

DNS request timed out.

timeout was 2 seconds.

      • Can't find server name for address 71.242.0.12: Timed out

      • Default servers are not available

Server: UnKnown

Address: 71.252.0.12

DNS request timed out.

timeout was 2 seconds.

DNS request timed out.

timeout was 2 seconds.

      • Request to UnKnown timed-out

The DNS servers are correct (same as from my router). Any ideas?
