VMWare Fusion 10 - VMWare Tools greyed out

Hi.

We have VMWare Fusion 10 installed on an iMac (Sierra) where we tried to install the VMWare Tools to get sharing folders to work.

When installing the VMWare Tools I received a Bluescreen of death where it reported that vm3dmp.sys caused the error.

We then restarted Virtual OS (Windows 7 64 bit) and were able to login as usual, but now the "Cancel VMWare Tools Installation" is greyed out.

What would be the next step to get the VMWare Tools installed so we can get the map sharing working?

Please be advised that Virtual Machine Image (so the speak) was created by Fusion 4 (which we've upgraded to 10) if that makes a difference.IMG_0191.JPG

Thank you.

Hi Patrick,

Looks like VMware Tools detection logic thinks it is still installing VMware Tools.

First thing I would try is to uninstall VMware Tools from the configuration screen.

After uninstalling VMware Tools I would expect the "Install VMware Tools" option to be there.

If it isn't there then what you can always do is to copy the windows.iso file from the VMware Fusion bundle in Application folder to the Documents folder.

All the menu item does is to present the iso image to the DVD rom and connect/disconnect the image.

The iso images are located within the application bundle, you can either use "Show Package contents" in Finder on the VMware Fusion app and navigate the folders to copy out the iso image so that you can connect the dvd, or use the following command in terminal to have it copy the windows.iso file to your documents folder.

    $ cp /Applications/VMware\ Fusion.app/Contents/Library/isoimages/windows.iso ~/Documents/

Connect the iso to the DVD/CDrom in your guest.

If no installer appears, go to the DVD-rom within windows and click "setup" (for 32 bits windows) or "setup64" (for 64 bits windows)

Once you see an installer, click "Next" until Finish, keep the defaults.

  • Reboot the guest when done installing (it will ask by itself to reboot)

Hope this helps,

Okay so on mac I was trying to create a win 7 vm machine using vmware fusion on MacOS obviously.

I had the same issue and what I did was I disabled cd/dvd  and restarted the machine, this re-enabled "install vmware tools".

How to disable

Open the specific vm screen > go into the  virtual machine drop down > settings >  then under  "Removable Devices" click on CD/DVD (SATA) >  Uncheck  "Connect CD/DVD drive".

This should re-enable  the   "install vmware tools". Thanks
