I tried upgrading to VM fusion 3, but on attempting to load a Windows XP virtual machine, Fusion produces the following error:
'The document "Windows XP.vmx" could not be opened. VMware Fusion cannot open files in the "Steinberg VST mixer Settings" format.'
Steinberg mixer settings are related to Steinberg Cubase which I have installed on the mac. Trying to change the file info for .vmx files doesn't help. I had to uninstall Fusion 3 and go back to Fusion 2. This is ridiculous!
I have exactly the same problem,
Did you find a fix?.
Cheers
Andy
Ok Figured it out.
Rename the folder containing your vm files by adding .vmwarevm to the end.
So I changed mine from
WindowsXP to WindowsXP.vmwarevm
Start VMWare Fusion 3 and do file->open, locate the renamed folder and open it.
When the dialog comes up, choose "I moved it"
Seamless!
Great, your fix worked. But how on earth did you come upon this idea? Is there something in the docu that I missed? It seems to me that the new version recognizes folders rather than files, but where is this documented?
Good stuff.
I had a look at my VMs that version 3 would recognise and they were all in the .vmwarevm format.
So I searched for "converting vmx to vmwarevm" and found a link about renaming.
Basically it is because our VMs were not created by VMWare fusion,
I am sure we will not be the only ones caught out by it, why version 3 no longer accepts them must be a bug I would have thought.

Thanks for the solution, Bob. I was going back and forth with support and they hadn't figured it out. I forwarded them your post.
Wow Bob after 3hrs of pulling my non existent hair (I shaved my head earlier ) I finally ran into your article.
What a life saver!
THANKS
p.s. Works for VMWARE 5.0.3 and OS X 10.8.4
Key words for the robots below:

VMWARE won't recognize my images after Mac OS X upgrade.
