VM became extremely slow after upgraded to macOS 10.14.6 [Officially Solved]

------------20190827--------------------------

This issue is officially solved with Apple’s macOS 10.14.6 supplemental update.

Thanks to all of you.

A thumb down to Apple’s software team...

————————

After I upgraded my 2 MBP to 10.14.6, all of the Windows VMs became extremely slow and stuck at the login screen...

The VMs are set to use TPM, I don't know if it's relevant.

Anyone came across the same situation?

Now I cannot continue my work...really frustrating...

—————20190727————-

I’m updating this for convenient reference.

Status: This issue has not been solved yet.

Many users encountered this issue which leads to completely unusable of VMs.

And we got some replies from Fusion developers, you could help developers identify issues by replying your hardware models/is disk encrypted or have the VM encrypted etc.

We have some reports that some users found out that if set the memory of VM to 2G could help.

Re: VM became extremely slow after upgraded to macOS 10.14.6

If you don’t need to use much memory and can work with it, you might try set the memory to 2G, or maybe less than 4G is also okay?

Still we are waiting for an official solution.

------------20190809--------------------------

Thanks to ksc

Re: VM became extremely slow after upgraded to macOS 10.14.6

I updated to Fusion 11.1.1, confirmed that I can login to the system, and desktop shows normally.

As ksc says, it is a workaround which I'm not quite sure if I can trust it to do my work in it....

At least, I'm able to get my works out and change to other options now.

I'll mark this issue as resolved for now, but keep the [Workaround Released] tag in the subject.

Looks like it would take quite some time for a real fix, I'll keep an eye on this.

Same here.

1. Encrypted VM - Yes

2. encrypted disk - Yes

3. Mac:

I tried to spin up a new Windows 10 Pro and even during the setup, its slow and seemed to stop around 47%.  I did encrypt the drive and enabled TPM.

I spun up another Windows 10 Pro without disk encryption and it went through the setup pretty fast.  The one that I had enabled disk encryption is still at 49%.  I'm going to let both run overnight and see.  Hopefully I can get this to work because I do need TPM for work.

--UPDATE 7/25--

The encrypted WIN10 failed to go past 48% and had to force quit VMFusion.  The non-encrypted WIN10 works fine, however, I do need TPM:(   My Ubuntu VM works fine even after the upgrade to 10.14.6.

I also wondered why such serious problems didn't show up during testing. Given the importance that virtualization is taking in everyday working life, such a long outage is not acceptable. I would not have expected this from the global leader in virtualization. By the way, it would also be helpful if VMware would be more transparent with this issue and inform their customers better.

same with me - this really sucks - I´m using my windows vm on a day by day basis and need  it for my work !

There was a post some time ago from an insider that VMWare isn`t really interested in developing VMWare Fusion ... now i`m thinking about switching to Parallels.

Hi everyone,

I'm no more able to work with my Virtual Machines, just after yesterday upgrade to MacOS Mojave Fixpack 10.14.6 (with Fixpack 10.14.5 everything was fine).

Please, fix it ASAP, I'm not able to work anymore!! The problem DOES NOT depend by the Encryption. Here they follow my hardware details:

1. is the impacted VM encrypted? NO

2. is macOS 10.14.6 disk encrypted? NO

3. your hardware information, for example, MBP 2017, 2018.  MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid-2015)

Hi,

i faced with this issue too. When will be patch?

MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2018)

Processor: 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7

UPD: Me helped previous advise.

1. Deleted snapshots

2. Removed encryption

3. Unchecked split in disks

4. Set debug to None in Advanced settings

UPD2: Issue is reoccured after a while. VM freezes and stopped to respond.

Please fix ASAP

So for me on my MBP it seems to only be the Windows 10 VM and what will happen is it doesn't hang, I can launch it log in and after like 3 minutes my MBP will simply crash. After the MBP comes back up I get the send error report to Apple messages.

I have been testing Windows 2008 R2, Linux (SLES and Mint), macOS 10.14 and ESXi 6.7 guests on the same and all work correctly. So this does seem to be a Windows 10 only problem. I didn't have Windows Server 2016 or 2019 guests to test.

I have also tested the ame Windows 10 VM with VMware tools removed, and also dropped the VM harware version. These did not stop the Windows 10 VM from locking up.

There are a lot of diagnostic logs when running this VM:

Little more information here that might be helpful. (Macbook Pro 15" 2017, 16GB, 2.9GHz i7, Mojave 10.14.6, VMWare Fusion 11.1, VMWare Tools are current version from 11.1)

I had a working Windows 10 install that after the Mojave 10.14.6 upgrade was responsive on the login screen, but once logged in I could never do anything with the desktop and the CPU was pegged. So I deleted that VM and did the following:

I reinstalled Windows 10 from an older ISO (around Mar 2019).. and Windows 10 seemed to be working. I used it for a day and everything was more or less fine. While I was working on it, Windows updated in the background and had me reboot. Now after the reboot I can get to the login screen (pretty responsive, can type password very fast), but after I login the machine started updating and then eventually started slowing down and is now stuck at this screen.

Screen Shot 2019-07-25 at 8.27.24 AM.png

I'm gonna let it sit here for awhile and see if it eventually comes back.

I think I may have found something, but need others to try it

In Setting -> Security & Privacy > Privacy (Tab)

Can you uncheck "VMWare" from the accessibility section?

After I did that my VM started working again

I  have a 2015 15" Macbook Pro, and am seeing this behavior on Windows 10 as well.  It's really, really impeding my ability to work.  Been a rough week!  Just constant freezing and waiting.  Hopefully Apple/VMWare are working on a solution!!

Works for me, but if I uncheck VMWare from the accessibility I can't use the Windows machine with the keyboard and mice, So I re-enable the accessibility option and than the machine look to be more responsive. CPU around 15% memory 80% Disk at 1%

I attached the picture on the setting that you need. You need to disable and re-enable it if you want to control your machine. I don't know if it's permanently (after VM reboot or Mac reboot).

I left it disabled which doesn't seem to affect Macbook keyboard and trackpad usage in the VM.

Update:

There is an occasional spike in CPU and lag when switching from host to guest windows (runnign VM fullscreen) but this recovers and continues to allow the VM to be used. Previously the VM was essential dead and had to power off or rollback to a snapshot.

Same problem here after installing 10.14.6

1. is the impacted VM encrypted?

Yes, Windows 10 64-bit. (mandated by my employer)

2. is macOS 10.14.6 disk encrypted?

Yes

3. your hardware information, for example, MBP 2017, 2018.
