Use existing Windows Installation as VM

Hi all,

I'm on a Mac. I have Windows 10 installed on an external SSD and boot into that by holding option when I restart. I'm wondering if there's a way to access it using VM Ware Fusion from within the Mac OS environment?

Thanks!

Hi,

The only supported physical disk configuration that is supported by VMware is a bootcamp setup where the other OS is:

- the only other OS
- is a supported Windows Bootcamp OS
- is on the same disk as macOS

Even with all those restrictions that config still has its own issues at times.

It does not mean it is impossible to do this, but it requires extra efforts.

The following article describes how you would setup a RDM disk to point to your physical disk:
https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/2097401

But beware of issues like Windows activation as Windows will see a completely different set of hardware if you boot it up as a VM.
I would also recommend to make backups of your externally booted OS before trying to do this.

Hope this helps,
