Unity Mode Greyed out on a Windows 10 VM

Hi,

I am currently using the Fusion 8.5 trial.

My current setup is:

Host: macOS Sierra

Guest VM: Windows 10 Pro 32-bit

For some reason, the unity mode is greyed out under the View menu. I've tries reinstalling VMWare Tools but the result is the same. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Hello,

While it still probably is a VMware Tools issue (see notes below) you might want to skip on Unity for the moment.

There's a number of people reporting crashing problems with the combination Fusion 8.5 and Windows guest OS.

That might be unique to their setup, but chances are it is a Fusion 8.5 issue.

See for details:

Re: 8.5 Keeps crashing

As you guessed correct functionality on Unity mode depends on VMware Tools.

Here's my notes on that topic.

Do not try a repair install from within the Guest OS as it likely will not fix this, unfortunately the "Reinstall VMware Tools" from the drop down menu also falls in that same category.

You really need the guest OS to reboot inbetween uninstall and install to make sure that all the files from VMware Tools are in the correct locations and of the correct version.

In short follow these steps:

  • Uninstall VMware Tools
  • Reboot guest OS
  • Install VMware Tools
  • Reboot guest OS.

A bit of a longer description is:

  • In Windows, go to Control Panel -> Programs & Features -> Select VMware Tools -> Uninstall

Follow the steps from the installer to completely uninstall VMware Tools

  • Reboot the guest (==Windows)
  • Then from the Virtual Machine menu select "Install VMware Tools"

If no installer appears, go to the DVD-rom within windows and click "setup" (for 32 bits windows) or "setup64" (for 64 bits windows)

Once you see an installer, click "Next" until Finish, keep the defaults.

  • Reboot the guest when done installing (it will ask by itself to reboot)

Mine is greyed out too but it becomes avail after the system finally finished booting....there is a service I think that needs to launch before Unity is available.

Ayang02,

Is your virtual hardware set to latest?

You can find the settings for that under Virtual Machine -> Settings -> Compatibility

You can change that with the virtual machine shut down, not suspended.

Hi,

Can you attach a vmware.log file to a reply here?

(The vmware.log files are to be found in the VM bundle folder)

I have the same problem with 8.5 . I have tried uninstalling VMWare tools , rebooting Windows OS guest, reinstalling VMWare tools . I reinstalled Fusion itself . Unit mode is grayed out and copy and paste between host and guest does not work either. HW compatibility,  set to the highest .

This did not happen with pre 8.x version as far as I can recall. Any help /pointers would be much appreciated.

Host OS X Sierra . Windows 10 guest Macbook Pro 2015
