Ubuntu 6.10 Desktop/Debian: Failed to start the X server

Ubuntu 6.10 Desktop 64-bit installs and runs great (slow, of course). Until I booted into single-user mode (was trying to get a console larger than 80x25, no success). Thereafter, I get the diagnostic: Failed to start the X server (see below for backtrace).

Tried restaring VMware, restarting OS X, reinstalling VMware Tools, verifying xorg.conf. All to no avail. The same problem occurs with a recent Debian amd64 distribution, though in that case, I never got X to run, it always reported the same diagnostic. Debian requires recompiling VMware Tools, since it is a recent kernel.

Cannot reproduce the problem on either FreeBSD or Solaris Express.

I am running Fusion Beta 2 on OS X 10.4.8 on iMac 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2GB RAM (1GB allocated to the VM).

Presumably corresponding to attempts to start X are soft reset log entries in vmware.log that look like:
