Ubuntu 10.4 Server install fails on VMWare Fusion 3.1.3 (OS X Lion)
My team and I have been unable to install Ubuntu 10.4 as a guest on VMWare Fusion 3.1.3 under OS X Lion. The newly-installed OS fails to boot. We have tested this on several different Macs, and the problem is 100% reproducible. Ubuntu 10.4 VMs that were previously created under Snow Leopard continue to work fine.
Here’s the install procedure we’ve been following:
Create a new VM using OS disk image: ubuntu-11.04-server-amd64.iso
Do not use use Easy Install.
Removed USB controller
Removed serial port
Added second Network Adapter: Bridged
Launch the VM, and the Ubuntu install wizard starts up.
F4 to set install mode: Install a minimum virtual machine
Partitioning: Format primary partition as ReiserFS
When prompted to select packages, choose OpenSSH only.
(Take a VM snapshot at the “Finish the installation” prompt for good measure.)
When prompted to eject installation media, switch VM to “Using Physical CD/DVD Drive”.
First OS boot attempt:
GRUB bootloader is briefly visible (shoing normal and recovery boot mode options), then black screen.
Shutdown VM, then second OS boot attempt:
GRUB prompts for boot mode. Select normal Ubuntu boot.
