USB no longer asking where to connect

I am running Fusion 7.1.3 under OS X 10.10.5 (Yosemite).  Previously, USB devices would ask where to connect when VMs were running.  At some point recently, this stopped happening.

The Advanced USB option is set to "Ask what to do" for the VM in question.  I have deinstalled Fusion, deleted preference files, and reinstalled.  USB devices simply attach to the host OS without asking.

There are messages in the log file of the form:

2016-08-24T07:30:56.143-05:00| VMware Fusion| I120: REM-USB: Protocol version min:15 current:16. hostId:52 8c 83 ff fe a1 fe 03-e8 be 99 3c f4 1b 5f 2e

2016-08-24T07:30:56.143-05:00| VMware Fusion| I120: SOCKET connect failed, error 2: No such file or directory

Which I thought might be corrected with a complete reinstallation.

When I look at the USB and Bluetooth settings in the VM, it shows no connected devices.  The devices in question are all external hard drives, some connected to a USB hub, but one is directly connected, still with no prompt as to where to connect.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.
