I am running El Capitan 10.11.3 on a MacBook Pro with VMWare Fusion 7.1.3. Also the same configuration on an iMac desktop.
When I insert a USB stick, I get the "Connect to" pop up, select Mac, but nothing happens. I have to pull out the stick, then re-insert it to have it mount on my desktop. I don't have this issue when VMWare is not running.
It's not the reader, as I have the same problem when I plug in a USB keyboard. Works fine when VMWare is not running, must unplug, replug if VMWare is running.
Any thoughts or do I live with this?
Thanks for any insights,
Charles Radanovich
Hi,
I'm afraid it is "live with it" until VMware fixes it.. and that isn't likely to happen anymore for Fusion 7, but who knows.

Hi West5733,
Could you please provide the brand and model about your USB stick? Is the problem persisted if you switch to USB 2.0 controller in USB & Bluetooth settings?
Regards,

I'm noticing the very same behavior with VMware Fusion Pro 8.1, OS X 10.11.4
This may be related. I insert a new Sandisk Cruzer 32GB and select Connect to Windows. Run the Windows command DISKPART CLEAN with the intention of creating a bootable drive. Part way through the process the device disconnects and becomes unreadable. It is not usable at all until I run the Mac's Disk Utility and Clean the USB stick. This is reproducible and has happened with more than one USB Cruzer. VMWare 8.1, OS X 10.11.3.
I''m new to this forum, does anybody from VMWare look at these and/or respond?
Sometimes, but it's officially a user to user forum.
Are you connecting it directly to the machine or through a hub? And what's the guest OS?
