USB 2 external drive or extra virtual drive

Hi There

I've been using VMware Fusion happily on my 17Macbook (2.4 4gb RAM) pro since it first appeared - I've kept my windows partition to Fat 32 with 32Gb.

I mostly run my bootcamp partition as a virtual machine, and this works really well (occasionally I boot to XP)

When running XP I have to access large amounts of data which is currently on a USB 2 external drive - this is very slooooow (it is much much faster if I boot the same XP installation under bootcamp than if I do it through Fusion).

I'm about to get an iMac with much larger disk space - I'd still like to keep the XP partition to 32Gb and FAT (for access purposes)

So, my question is:

Will it be quicker to make another virtual drive on my imac hard disk and keep my large database files there? Or will it be quicker to keep to my current method and have the data on an external USB 2 drive?

Thanks in advance

Kind Regards
