Transport (VMDB) error -14: Pipe connection broken; macOS BigSur Fusion 12

I have a brand new M1 iMac with a fresh install of BigSur 11.6 and Fusion 12. I have also downloaded a fresh Windows 10 ISO from Microsoft's website. I get the error mentioned in the subject line when I try to install Windows. I have Googled and viewed every article I can find (including those on this site) and have tried all the solutions suggested with no luck.

Can anyone help me? I am out of hair to pull out.

Fusion 12 won't work on an M1 machine.  You need the technical preview: https://communities.vmware.com/t5/Fusion-for-Apple-Silicon-Tech/bd-p/160004

And note that a) windows is not supported, and b) you can only use ARM based operating systems.  So anything for x86/64 will not (and will never) run.

Please read the community threads for information on windows 11 ARM - there are people who have it running, but as there are no VMWare tools due to Microsoft licensing restrictions, it has limitations.
