The file specified is not a virtual disk. - How do I repair?

Hello

So I have searched the Forums and it appears that this issue was mainly for people who were using BootCamp. I am NOT using BootCamp but cannot start my Fusion image without getting the message - The file specified is not a virtual disk

Recently I moved this virtual disk to a secondary SSD drive, but otherwise it had always booted fine.

I have deleted the VMWare Folder in application support but this has not solved my issue.

Appreciate someones help in trying to get this imager running again.

Thanks

which file is not a virtual disk ?

maybe you assigned the wrong file ? - like blabla-flat.vmdk instead of blabla.vmdk ?

it would help if you post the vmx file or latest vmware.log

Have a look at the "Collect vmware.log files" section of and archive and attache the vmware.log files (usually 4 of them) to a reply post.

Also a file listing of the Virtual Machine Package...

1. In a Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal), type the following without the quotes, including the trailing space, however do not press Enter yet and note that the following contains lowercase L's, not ones: "ls -lAF "

2. In Fusion's Virtual Machine Library (VMware Fusion (menu bar) > Window > Virtual Machine Library), ctrl-click the target Virtual Machine and then select "Show in Finder".

3. Drag and drop the target Virtual Machine onto the Terminal and this will populate the fully qualified pathname of the Virtual Machine.

4. Next type the following without quotes, including leading space, then press Enter: " > ~/Desktop/filelist.txt"

Example of the full command line in Terminal:

ls -lAF /Users/${USER}/Documents/Virtual Machines.localized/Windows XP.vmwarevm > ~/Desktop/filelist.txt

5. Next attach the filelist.txt file that was created on the Desktop to a reply post.

Last time this VM worked was 18 december last year ?

on that day you were running out of diskspace.

You send much more files then I asked for Smiley Wink

if you try to launch the VM now - does this create a new vmware.log ?

If yes - send that one - and only that one please

No. I have sent you any current logs that have been generated. I am sorry if I sent along too much data.

You have the current files so how do we fix?

Thank you

No to what ?

No new vmware.log ? sure ?

Are you still trying to do this on a disk without free space ?

Hello

No to what?

I am saying that I have not sent archival logs. I have sent what is available right now. The virtual disk will not lauch. I am sure there are no new logs.

The disk is on an SSD with 12 GB available.

Thanks

Ok - I have to trust you Smiley Wink

Please answer the question if last successful use was December 18th last year.

Next I need to inspect "Windows XP Professional.vmx" - and please attach a screenshot of the error message when you try to start the VM

How do I get the .vmx file to you? It doesn't seem to want to move from the package.

I think it is a permission issue. Set permissions for the 22 files named Windows XP Professional-000002* like the permissions set for the other vmdk-files.

You still have not answered my other question 😞

It is entirely possible it was December. I do however think I opened it after that. Much of this trouble started when I moved the image tp the SSD.

Thanks

and now ? - does it work after fixing the permissions ?

the second snapshot has no executable flag as the others have

You were correct that the files were not executable, so I changed them. It is stil not recognized as a Virtual Disk.

then maybe "Windows XP Professional-000002.vmdk" has a bad entry - post it please

Fusion defaults to 600 on .vmdk files and they never need the executable set.
