The file *** is not in a folder shared with the host and cannot be opened by the host.

...although the file is actually in a folder shared with the host, as I can open the file from the shared windows folder in macOS.

VMware is getting on my nerves as an incredible cumbersome solution 😕

Some further information:

* If I move one of the files from the problematic folder(s) to the desktop; I get a message that the file cannot be copied with it's properties. The file opens correctly in macOS.

* If I move the .pdf file back from the desktop to the folder it came from, then the file won't open again, and I get the same error message.

The files always open when I open them from Finder in macOS.
