Sound Card issues running macOS Monterey v12.3.1 on macOS 12.3.1 via Fusion 12.2.3

I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2018) running macOS Monterey v12.3.1 with a macOS VM running the same version (12.3.1) via VM Fusion 12.2.3.   These were both upgraded from macOS 10.15.7 (Catalina) recently.   Since the upgrade, I have not been able to get sound to work on the VM.   I get the message "no output device found" in setting->sound->output.   I have tried every permutation of deleting the sound card from the VM, reinstalling VMware tools, and rebooting that I can think of using this thread as a guide even though it's for a windows VM.   Nothing in that thread seems to help.

Anyone got any ideas for me to try?   Or ways that I can check logs to see what the issue might be?

Did you manually reinstall VMWare tools in the guest?

Yes, I uninstalled.  Rebooted.   And then installed them again.   Rebooted.   Nothing.
