Sharing between MacBookPro and iMac

I have a MacBookPro and just bought a 27" iMac. I plan to use the iMac as a second display primarily but the hardware on the iMac is a little beefier and I run some intense applications (Visual Studio & SQL 2008). Is it possible for me to run the VM easily off the laptop when on the go and then when at home to run off the iMac without having to copy the 18gb file from one PC to the other. Is there a good method for doing this?

Put your MBP in Firewire Target Disk Mode and attach it to the iMac. Then the MBP's HD shows up as an external HD on the iMac. Then you just run the VM without having to copy it over.
