Shared VM, Best Backup Without Snapshots?

We have Fusion running on a production research Mac Pro. Instead of a hosted solution like AWS or ESXi, they went with VMWare Fusion.

The setup requires the VM to live in the shared folder so that all users can access the same VM in their Mac accounts.

Easy, I followed: https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/1005196

Now I am seeing a big issue in creating a reliable backup solution since snapshots had to be disabled per that article.

We have a Synology NAS so I've set up Active Backup for Business to backup the entire VM file but am wondering if this is optimal.

Any suggestion?

Backups of VM's need to be when (and only when) the VM is either suspended or shut down, and needs to be set to ensure that entire bundle is backed up consistently (e.g. time machine can age out pieces at different times).

For something more sophisticated, check out @wila backup program for VM's.
