Hi there,

I am the developer for the VMware Shared Folders feature.

The issue is caused by Microsoft upgrades destroying registry settings.

After the upgrade you just need to check and restore the registry setting below and everything should start to work (for Shared Folders).

(No need to uninstall and install again, as this will also restore the registry, but will take significantly longer.)

All you have to do is edit the registry

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\NetworkProvider\Order

Name: ProviderOrder

Type: REG_SZ

Data: "RDPNP, LanmanWorkstation,webclient"

Modify to:

Data: "vmhgfs,RDPNP, LanmanWorkstation,webclient"

Exit the registry application

Then you will then have the shared folders drives and UNC paths accessible once more. No need to reboot or log off. No need to uninstall and install tools again.

This was also noted in thread Re: Windows 10 support

Hope this saves some users time.

Also when I was at Microsoft earlier this year testing Win 10 and Shared Folders, I and others (for redirectors) told the migration guys of this issue and they promised it would be fixed.

Steve

Thanks. Steve

Hello,

These type of issues are almost always due to a broken VMware Tools install.

Do not try a repair install from within the OS as it likely will not fix this.

Instead follow these steps:

Uninstall VMware Tools

Reboot guest OS

Install VMware Tools

Reboot guest OS.

Thank you! This solved two problems and did save me a lot of time (compared to going through the multiple troubleshooting documents and steps I found in a Knowledge Base search).

My two problems: I could access the Shared Folders, but not through a Z: drive mapping (and I couldn't re-map it), and I also had trouble going down more than a couple of folders deep in my mirrored Documents folder--I'd try to double-click to open it and nothing would happen. Your Regedit trick took care of both, without even logging off and on!

Oh... I found it.

windowkey+R and regedit, then we could find "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\NetworkProvider\Order"

And when I change it, I solve dramatically.

Thanks Steve:)

Just FYI:

After updating Windows 10 to Windows 10 b1115 the registry entry 'vmhgfs' disappeared (it was there before the update).

Hi Steve

Uninstalling and new installing VMWare tools have helped until last week's update by Microsoft.

End of last week the update destroyed my printer connection as well as the shared folders.

Now I did find your proposal here.

Problem: that registry entry is gone, so nothing I can fix.

Any suggestion?

Overnight - it appears that Windows 10 did another update - as such, when I tried logging in - "Shared Folders" was no longer working and trying to access documents as before, was failing. Tried the standard Uninstall/Reinstall of the VMware Tools which gave me partial access - but the route to get there was a pain in the backside. SOOOO - I just tried the hack for the registry modification...and everything is back to normal - no problems accessing shared content now.

THANK YOU!

Richard

Steve,  You are the man!!!  This upgrade to Windows 10 has been nothing short of insanity,

This simple command line in the Regestry changed my outlook on the day,   Data: "vmhgfs,RDPNP, LanmanWorkstation, webclient" .  I am happy to report my Quickbooks is now updating.

I have had additional problems after upgrading to Windows 10.  Redoing my Homegroup (solved)  running my CAD program (the USER ACCOUNT CONTROL pops up every time I launch) and running PhotoShop.

If you have any other solutions to Registry data entry to make my CAD program open without the pop up box (USER ACCOUNT CONTROL) opening, please share in this thread.

Thanks Steve,

I experienced this 'feature' this morning after a W10 upgrade. I changed the registry entry as you instructed, and my vmware-host drives now map ok.

However, now I can't seem to connect to other computers on my local peer network. The messages is "An unexpected network error occurred"

Any insights?

Richard
