I found this reference from 2008 that says VM's can run in Fusion in the background by using force-quit
http://communities.vmware.com/message/905824#905824
Does anyone know if this has been improved on or you can run the VM's in the background on startup like Workstation 8 now allows?
Cheers
Have a look at: Running a VM Headless (no GUI) and Controlling Shutdown/Suspend with Mac OS X Reboot/Shutdown
Be sure to review the whole thread as I have not had time to make changes to some of my original post that needs to be change.
The answer is NO. You still need to force quit UI to run VM in background in Fusion 4.
Thanks. Is it possible on a Mac to set Fusion to start up automatically and power on VM's automatically (preferably in a methodical way, vAPP style) on login then? I don't really mind about the Windows being open.
If not would it be possible to script this? Or is it only a manual process?
Basically I'm trying to justify whether I should jump to a Mac (I'm tempted) from a Windows laptop, which I'm using with Workstation, but I don't want to suddenly have a load of manual processes for my mini lab in doing so.
I appreciate Workstation is aimed at a different user base than Fusion and thus has many more features.
Other reason is the Macbook Pro will support 16GB RAM, the only Windows laptops supporting this and above are really heavy desktop replacements. I want it under 2kg as I'm on the road a lot
I remember I answered on this thread:

If you want to start a Virtual Machine upon Login simply drag and drop the Virtual Machine Package onto the Login Items preference pane under the target Account in System Preferences.
If you want it running as a Service whether or not logged in then see my other reply in this thread.

Not true! You can start a Virtual Machine using vmrun with the nogui option and thus not having to force quit anything or one can run it as a Service per directions linked in my original reply in this thread.
Awesome! Thank you both of you!
That pretty much confirms I'll be buying a Macbook Pro then. ![]()
