Retina full resolution option yields frozen or black screen unless window is small

Hello,

I'm trying to use the "Use full resolution for Retina display" and boot Windows 8 in full screen on my 2880 x 1800 15" Retina MacBook Pro. However, the screen is black on boot.

In windowed mode, it works if the window is half the size of the screen (approximately). If I resize the VMWare Fusion window to fill 75% or larger of the MacBook's screen, then contents of the window freeze and the Windows GUI is frozen.

Does this setting simply not work, or should I keep messing with it?

OK, I found that if I enable 3D Acceleration in the VM settings, it works.

But that is not a solution right now, because enabling 3D acceleration causes random full system crashes (in the Windows guest) as described here:

So I guess Retina support is not ready for prime time. (It is also half-baked in Windows itself; if you set the UI settings in Windows to 150% or 200%, things look good, but various old legacy apps don't support those settings, and (astoundingly) neither does any of the new freak-show Windows 8 UI.)
