Problems with Changing Settings on Ubuntu

Dear all,

I am running Ubuntu 8.10 (64-bit) on a Mac Pro 2.83 Ghz Dual-Quad Core Intel Xeon, 10 GB RAM machine. I installed Ubuntu with the default memory and virtual processor settings (256 MB Ram & 1 processor) but quickly realized that this would be insufficient for my purposes. So, I changed the settings to to 3584 MB RAM and 4 virtual processors...but Ubuntu failed to load, asked me to do a manual file-check, and then froze as doing so. Reverting to the original settings leads to a normal Ubuntu start up.

Do I have to re-install Ubuntu with my desired settings? What could be causing this problem?

Thanks!
