Did you check 'Use Easy Install' when you began the installation in Fusion?

I have the same problem as the original poster.  You can't pick Easy Install because that only seems to work when you have a CD attached.  With the MacBook Air, you have to initialize the VM with the Win7 installation disk.

On a MacBook Air without a SuperDive attached you need to use an ISO Image to install Windows in the Virtual Machine.
