Problem Opening Vsphere Image on Fusion for Mac

I was trying to move an image from VMWare Vsphere esxi (a linux server image) to Fusion for the Mac so that I could more easily configure the system before deploying the server for testing. However, after copying the files from the server to the Mac, I get the error "The file specified is not a virtual disk." I checked the vmware log entries, which are as follows:

While the entries seem to confirm the error, I still can't quite figure out what I've done wrong. I've tried adjusting permissions of the files in the virtual image to ensure that they are the same as a working virtual image (a windows images created on the Mac), but that didn't make a difference.

Any help or suggestions are appreciated.
