Preventing Fusion from forcing Default Apps to open in VM when they should be open in Mac Host.

Having very frustrating times with Fusion not allowing us to accept the default applications on the Mac, and instead it defaults always back to the Windows application which unnecessarily starts the VM.

While there is a setting to enable the Windows OS to open files from the Mac (which we want the guest to open only a few specific file types that we can't run natively - like Visio, etc), it's not seemingly configurable.

I've seen a few threads on here without any real answer so figured I'd ask a different way and add a screenshot.

If I have an application installed on both the guest and the host that can handle a certain file type, and I want the host to always open it.  If I right click on the file and pick the Host app, set as default - then that works ONLY for that specific file. The next PCAP I try to open is defaulted to the guest OS.  I've attached a screenshot trying to tell the Mac to always default PCAP wireshark files to the host, but Fusion takes over and always defaults to the guest.  That particular file if I change the default application and always open with, it only works for that single file.

MacOS Monterey 12.0.1

Fusion Pro: 12.2.1

Anyone solve this issue?

Hi,

That's either this one:
https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-Fusion/12/com.vmware.fusion.using.doc/GUID-F230869E-D1DE-4EA2-B450...

or this:
https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-Fusion/12/com.vmware.fusion.using.doc/GUID-7C24F5D6-D224-42B1-B5E1...

If you can't get it to clear using either of those options then look at what VM is getting fired up.

Shut it down.

Open the VM bundle

Locate a folder in the bundle called "AppListCache" ..

Delete the whole folder. (or just the Wireshark one if you want to use other options, but I just tend to purge it all)

Thanks for the point in the right direction!  Those two links are the standard basics, but knowing where to search in the bundle was key.

Found Bundle.

Went in Applications Folder (Not Apps List Cache)

Removed all but the two apps needed out of that list.

Restarted Fusion and all is well.

Appreciate your time and response, that was frustrating for a while.
